I recently instructed at the pga championship. I went as the instructor for Jeff Martin.I first met jeff 10 yrs ago he was a 75 shooter who was working in a bag room in south florida .In my 25 yrs of teaching he is the only person to ever create a result of lasting value .He has played in 3 pga championships and several bank of boston events on the pga tour.At the time I was and aspiring player who was taking lessons from the top two instructors in the world,my game got steadily worst.I began to explore golf outside the industry stopped listening to all the taught feelings and perceptions that our all taught today.I consulted physics professors, engineers and doctors. And here is what I discovered that all the magizines and instructors dont want me to say.It is impossible to create a result or teach anyone to play better golf using any current system. If I had tiger woods exact mechanics I would still shoot 76 because I can not learn the only necessary motion that makes his game effective and that is the time learned extension and rotation of his right arm. With my mechanics he would still be tiger woods.Even if the methods taught were correct ,the way humans learn mechanical motion is thru repeated use of a device or drill that makes the motion desired exact for up to two years. It is impossible to make a change in any other fashion. So all tips fail as do all methods of video and written.Even at the highest level despite the good intentions of both parties change can never occur. Now back to jeff, what I came to realize also is that what all top teachers say creates speed and you here it weekly on the golf broadcast is the complete opposite. There is no speed produced from the body tiger rotates his hips at about 3.5 mph that equates out to the club at about 1.5 mph.Yet everyone wants to rotate there hips, this single action makes the game so difficult. Then I looked at balance the trend at the time was to fire your right side and get off the right heel this is the most imbalanced and weak position a golfer can be in.I predicted to jeff 10 yrs ago that soon all players will hit the ball on two feet and its coming true, look at phil mickelson.Another mechanical advantage jeff optimized was making his left hand grip match the club face, now like a ping pong player every time he hit a shot he new where the face was. This causes rapid improvement despite what is taught today. This is actually the strongest grip possible because now jeff can fully release his right hand with no fear of hitting hooks. The timing involved when one has a strong traditional grip is nearly impossible,a player must rotate his body open to the exact degree the his left is turned to avoid a snap hook.I also came to the knowledge that the best players in the world strike the ball with and open clubface, for years I taught players to square the clubface at impact. The big catch phrase on the golf channel is too get extension and they show you how to take the club away what appears to be very wide, the problem is if you ask any physics professors they are teaching the narrowest arc away from the ball.If the club is brought up quickly the arc goes forever and timing is greatly reduced.I also came to realize at the highest level its a putting contest, heres a practice routine for success despite what you read.Practice 30 footers to within three feet and practice 3 footers till you never miss .There is way to much practicing of misses, never practice missing. So in closing my point is all teaching at all levels have to fail what they teach is wrong and how they teach it is flawed because humans can never learn mechanical motion this way.You must do as jeff did become your own teacher, utilize the mechanical advantages. What you will come to realize is all the ball cares about is did the player use the club or tool effectively.Stop rotating your body like all the instructors are teaching and start rotating the club like it is designed to be used. When i saw jeff on the range at baltustrol in 2005. I saw a mechanical marvel who new where the clubface was on every swing. If he were to play enough to overcome the fear factor he would be as good as anyone currently on tour.No one else has ever created a result like he has,one that will last a lifetime.I am not a writer but a teacher maybe you can unscramble this and use it in and article I would greatly apreciate it .The magazines who rely on tips to sell books ,want nothing to do with the truth. Handicaps in this country despite the technology have never changed I know now there is a better way.If you have any questions email me at rgg284 at aol.com
