Yesterday I played in a small tournament organized by a guy I work with. It was 25 players with a nice $225 first place prize with some special events that can make it even better. I was very motivated for this tournament because I won it last year. Most of the guys are just casual golfers and only a few real contenders for the tournament so I knew I had a great chance to repeat.
I started off great hitting a perfect 280 yard 3wood and then a 9 iron to 3 feet, I then hit a nervous little three footer but it went it, birdie on the first hole.
The second hole started as an instant replay. I hit a perfect 3 wood and then a pure 9 iron to a blue flag but flew it to the back fringe and left myself short-sided. I didn't get up and down, bogey.
Then in my group my main competition, Jeremy, started playing the best golf of his life, he went on to make 3 birdies and an eagle and a LOT of long par putts to shoot 2 under 70. His previous career best was 75 so he really smashed his record best and did it when the chips were down, good for him.
I had a up and down day, on the bad side it was marked by 2 chips from uphill tight lies that I flubbed with my 60 degree wedge. These shots made me insanely angry and I didn't recover well on those holes, both times it led to double bogeys. I need to develop a 8 iron bump and run shot for these situations because I am messing up the tight lie flop about 60 percent of the time.
Also I played the 3 par 5's terribly, I am fairly long and I should really have cashed in there but I played those par 5's 3 over with par, double bogey and bogey. Jeremy who won the tournament played those 3 hole in 3 under, that is a 6 stroke difference. I didn't hit good tee shots on those hole and I think I was pressing a bit on the tee box there to hit it long and straight and did neither.
The tournament had a live leaderboard through theGrint app and that was a lot of fun to watch people slide up and down the leaderboard and constantly checking my position.
I did some things well though. My lag putting was good and I didn't three putt all day, I had 31 putts I hit my three wood great off the tee and it was a good weapon to have. I hit my mid irons decently and on the 17th hole I hit a 213 yard 3 hybrid into the wind and parred the tough 17th hole.
On the eighteenth hole I barely made a 3.5 foot putt to shoot 79.
I finished 2nd in the tournament and won $175.
