Today the winners of almost every PGA tour event last year tee off at the HYUNDAI Tournament of Champions on Maui. I know the golf channel and PGA Tour are thrilled that they have their BEST field in years. Back when tiger and Ernie while dueling here it was really an event you had to see but recently it's become a sleepy giggle that was more about family fun, lei adorned annoucers and little packages that showed all the fun stuff there is to do in Hawaii than it was about fierce competition.
The Elite golfers of today don't seem to have that inner fire in their bellies to stomp out and demoralize the competition that golfers did just 10 years ago but that is true for all sports right now. Everything is a lot more kumbaya. Across basketball and baseball and even hockey competitors are slapping eachother on the backs and hanging out together. The NFL seems to be the last bastion of the angry, winner take all, stop at nothing athlete and look it's more poplar than ever.
I digress.
The last few years watching the PGA Tour I have been ignoring the somewhat disappointing younger golfers and found myself paying more attention to Tiger's rehab stories and waiting for Phil to come around one more time.
Not this year. This year I am going to forget about the old guard and really give the young guys a chance to show me something worth watching. I want to see Rickie, Jordan and Rory really impress me. (Jason Day omitted, he is really too boring to watch and I can't even think about watching that pre-shot routine anymore).
I want to see them not only play awesome, but do it in an exciting way. I'm also looking for some has beens that never were come from the dregs of there careers and really make a mark.
I'm open to anything as long as it's fun. More and more I care less about the quality of the golf and more about the realness, competition and entertainment value.
So here's to hoping that 2016 is going to start a new Era of not just great but exciting golf.
If it's lame I'm not going to waste my time watching anything but the US OPEN.
:)
